Nothing Will Ever be the Same Again

“How do you describe a quiet that is three-dimensional, flexing and shimmering like some bewitched
cloak draped around you?”
- Julia Bennett, Lenscratch
This series takes place during deep winter, in the mystic north with only 6 hours of daylight. The book focuses on three windows in a century-old schoolhouse and their subtle surprises; nautical twilight, a bird, the sudden sun... This work is a return to a childhood state of pure presence. Like the practice of meditation, these photographs ask, “What happens when you pay attention?” Taking place over the entire 31 day-month of January, the book pays homage to the vulnerable season of winter. Following the movement of light across the minimal landscape, the serial images contemplate human, geologic and cosmic time. Through repetition, gate-folds, and other playful structural elements, the book is a return to a childhood state of pure presence. The square window references the camera frame – here, a medium-format camera, producing a square negative. Different white papers reflect shades of snow. The cover is embossed, and hidden inside the dust jacket, revealing a two-page poem that doubles as a list of titles. Echoing the book’s title, no two books are exactly alike. One page at the end is unique with a different image, a 2 ¼” C-print tipped in.
