In this recent lumen series, I am using books in a new way. Instead of using the book with its titles/content as a generator for meaning and image, I spin them on paper, in the sunlight, over a duration of time - a spinning meditation. As the books turn on top of the light-sensitive, silver-gelatin paper over many minutes or hours, a trance-like state is induced and the results seem to defy the laws of form. What should appear as a rectangle morphs slowly into a circle. The shape-shifting parallels a level of searching at mid-life presenting new possibilities evident in these luminous portals. If we are but the dust from expired stars 13.8 billion years ago, then doesn’t the mere fact of our existence this moment suggest a radical tuning in is necessary?
